Benefits Inquiry

It is the client’s responsibility to find out what coverage they have for therapy services.  It is strongly advised that clients do this in advance of starting therapy, if their participation in psychotherapy is dependent on coverage.

Here is some information regarding insurance coverage that you might find helpful:

If your insurance company lists the following, then your therapy sessions should be covered:

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)

Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT)

When you contact the insurance company, make sure you ask them these additional questions:

1)  What is my coverage amount?

2)  Is that amount per person?

3)  Is the coverage per calendar year?

4)  Do I require a doctor’s note?

It is YOUR responsibility to find out what coverage you have for therapy.  Every insurance company and policy is different, and privacy policies do not allow therapists access to this information.

If you are seeking Mediation Services (including Collaborative Law), be sure to notify the mediator of any coverage you have in advance of commencing mediation.   Insurance companies have their own rules regarding mediation coverage.  It is very likely that they will not cover these services.
